Who wore it best: My 5-year-old or a Green M&M?

This post is about the recent controversial shoe change of the green M&M and white go-go boots. All opinions are my own.

My five-year-old was rocking white go-go boots long before a piece of candy stole her style. The recent controversy that “broke the internet” recently, has me wondering if the world has gone crazy or if people are just bored that they have time to obsess over the footwear of a cartoon spokescandy.

Starlie (not her real name) wore her white go-go boots EVERYWHERE! And her foot outgrew them long before her affection for them did. So I did what anyone would do and I bought her a pair in the next size. For better or worse, I am the mom who let my kids pick out their clothes, dress themselves, and be their authentic, genuine selves (we’ll explore that topic another day because my kids have gone out in some outrageous outfits!).

Did I think for one minute that those boots were sexy? NOOO! I thought they were cute as heck though, and she was the kid who got even spunkier and sassier when she sported those boots. As if that white pleather held some sort of magic power and gave her the confidence to be Starlie.

So I applaud all the Kindergarteners out there who put on their go-go boots and hop on the school bus. And as I’m reading all the controversy surrounding the green M&M, I’m disappointed that they’ve put her in a non-descript, sensible shoe. Let’s encourage our kids and our spokescandy to be themselves and accept their style, to be different and not sexualize footwear. It’s those who dare to stand out who change the world.

Definitely, your 5-year-old wore them best! But I have news for Starlie, I wore them first in the 197Os!!! Loved them and thought I was so cool in them. I’ll have to dig out a picture one day for her 😉
